It’s a fact that most of us guys are obsessed with our freedom and took a vow of independence ever since they returned from their first date. While we like all the good things about relationships, namely sex, the thought of commiting ones life with just one woman is a claustrophobic thought. For most dudes commitment is equivalent to compromise, complete loss of independence, marital boredom, sleeping with just a single woman who would soon become a shadow of her former self…Yup! Commitment is one word that is dreaded by most men.

So here are the main reasons that explain a man’s fear of commitment:

Freedom no more

Men by their very nature want to live independent lives. Living by their own rules and making their own decisions - that’s what being a man is all about. But the second a woman enters the picture, all those little things that made life worth living – guzzling beer with friends, spending the weekend afternoon watching cricket or just going away on a road trip with the guys suddenly need her validation. And her answer is almost always, "No, we're a couple now" which can be translated as “we're going to do things my way”.

Loss of space

The moment we allow women to usurp the sanctity of our home, they just take over and ruthlessly go about feminising our pad. In fact, they're so committed to tastefully decorating our living space that they quickly start forbidding us to have any guy stuff at all. So our favourite leather couch gets replaced by uncomfortable sofas and settees, and our dumbbells are maliciously tucked away into an invisible corner of the garage.

One sex partner, forever

We men are programmed by nature to spread our seeds in as many fields as possible. So it’s obvious that we naturally crave for sexual variety. When we either commit to marriage or to a serious relationship we willingly volunteer to cut ourselves off from all other sexual pursuits. This is almost always followed by sexual boredom and a complete lack of desire.

Once bitten, twice shy

We have been divorced, dumped or cheated upon and the pain was so brutal that we are just terrified to commit again. So no matter how badly we want to get into that beautiful babe in our bed, if it involves commitment…no thanks, I still have my hands.

No compromise from her side

In a commitment, compromises should ideally be a 50/50 partnership in which each half contributes and shares equally. But for a woman, just allowing the man to have sex with her seems to be like the biggest compromise and sacrifice she’s making. So it’s either “my way or you're cut off from sex." Sexual manipulation takes away whatever little fun there was in a commitment. So if a man can breathe freely without the fear of being cut away from sex, there is hardly any point in getting married.

No free time

Get into a relationship and it starts eating into your time, make a commitment and you are no longer left with any. We are always under pressure to do something be it constantly taking her out, interacting with her family, remembering her birthday, or picking her up from work. For some of us, all the bother just isn't worth the effort.

Just not ready for it

Thank God, with fewer societal pressures (read family) to get married, have kids and grow a paunch, we can take our time and carefully weigh our options instead of jumping into marriage the month we get our first jobs. Now we can afford to play the field and weigh our options before we can finally get ourselves to commit.

Can't trust a woman

We men are fast learners and once we get jilted, dumped, cheated upon for the fifteenth time in six months, we are forced to admit that when it comes to women, it’s a gamble every step of the way. Women nowadays are rarely satisfied with what they have and are forever fishing for a better catch. Their scheming minds can rapid calculate their total profits from a relationship. Not that all women are like that, but once a man’s heart is trashed in the dude dump and he watches the love of his life walking the aisle with a rich businessmen, he just becomes weary of commitments.

She puts a lot of pressure

For a woman, if she gets it in her mind to get married, then the amount of pressure she can exert on her man is often enough to break him in half. Every word, gesture or move she makes is done with the motive of making us propose. At times the pressure gets so much that it causes us to pack up and leave.

The problem is that too many men, who commit, do it for all the wrong reasons: they're getting older; all their other friends are married with kids, the woman is good-looking but lacks other desirable qualities; or they are really scared that they might never meet anyone else.

So whether or not you ultimately want to get married and settle down is up to you. But what ever you do, don’t commit to a girl till you are not absolutely certain that she’s the one for you. Otherwise you will regret the decision for the rest of your life.
