Plotline
A bridge too far is one of the many war films churned out by Hollywood after WWII. The film focuses on the time when the Allies decided to give Germany a final jolt. Operation Market Garden, a failed attempt by the Allies, was to secure three bridges in Holland to gain access to Germany. What went wrong and where? The film focuses on the ordeal and perspectives of the soldiers battling it out to capture the key bridge at Arnhem.

Anthony Hopkins was reprimanded by real life Lt Col. Frost for running during the battle for capture for Arnhem. Hopkins claims to have tried and blamed his instincts for running. Instincts, Anthony? Give me a break! You were only participating in a make believe war!

A film with as impressive a star cast as the plot itself. I would easily classify this film as one of the best war epics ever made. Operation Market Garden which would have helped the Allies get their victory on a platter, backfired miserably. The movie is a grim reminder of what went wrong and where. Yet, the historically accurate movie doesn’t glorify war; it glorifies heroism, both individual and group without any bias. The direction is brilliant and the acting superb. I found no faults with the movie. Er, apart from a few glaring bloopers, of course. But, I grant Richard Attenborough (the director) that, the movie more than makes up for it in other areas. I would recommend you to buy a DVD, it is money well spent. You would definitely fall in love with the movie.
