The beginning
Born on 20th January, 1940. He is the youngest amongst six siblings. His father shifted to Mexico City from Lebanon at the age of 14 and set up a dry goods store. Carlos studied engineering and was married for 32 years before his wife died. Three of his children are looking after his giant telecom business.
Rise
Though as an investor and an entrepreneur Slim has been involved in many areas of business such as retail, banking, insurance and technology, his rise can be attributed to the privatisation era in Mexico in the 90’s when he led a group of investors including France Telecom and Southwestern Bell Corporation and bought Telmex and TELNOR from the Mexican government in a public tender. Telmex operates ninety percent of the telephone lines in Mexico and his mobile firm Telcel, around eighty percent of the mobile connections. . With funds from thee operations, he has managed to buy cellphone companies across Latin America.
