Optical Media Comparison By: Chip Logo

In the race for space, optical media has seen its milestones with regard to storage capacity. While the most popular CD format offering 700 MB, had its share of popularity before DVDs came in with a whopping 4.7 GB and scaled up to dual-layer DVDs. The advent of HD DVDs seemed to be in vain, for it never captured market as much as DVDs did. The latest technology seems to be the potential mainstay; it’s the Blu-ray with 25 GB storage capacity. However, the prices of media and hardware being the primary reason, Blu-ray is yet to pick up pace with DVDs. So as of now, DVDs are the best option to store heaps of data for the long run. But when Blu-ray media and hardware become affordable, you’ll be able to store more than five times the capacity of a DVD on a single disc. Wait patiently! The time shall soon come in a few years from now.
With the inception of optical media such as CDs and DVDs as medium for data-storage, magnetic media such as floppy discs vanished in thin air. This was mainly because the former offered too much for too little and grew like wild fire engulfing markets with tremendous speed. With an upper hand of affordability and accessibility, various scenarios such as personal, SOHO, or corporate, opt for optical media.
Currently a spindle of 100 DVDs costs around Rs 850 and 50 DVDs would cost half the amount. So, if you want to backup your data half–yearly, quarterly, monthly or even weekly, you wouldn’t be spending more than a few hundred rupees. Now that’s economical!

On second thoughts, haven’t the prices of hard drives lately been at a gradual-but-constant stoop? Then again, a hard drive wouldn’t be an ideal solution for archiving huge amounts of data which can be conveniently accessed by everyone. To top that off, transferring and distributing data is most convenient when done via optical media, especially when we’re talking in terms of gigabytes. Let’s take the best example possible, the CHIP DVD. Being the most popular media today, DVDs are the obvious choice to provide more than 4 GB of data, packed onto one thin piece of plastic. For instance we provide 8.5 GB of data, now which portable, affordable and convenient medium would allows us that?
There’s a plethora of optical discs available in the market, some of which clearly displaying all sorts of marketing stunts and fancy selling pitches. So who do you believe; the vendor selling them or would you go by the looks or maybe your own instincts?
This time around we’ve dedicated our comparison tests to optical media. And this is where you will find exactly what you’re looking for. Quality is a major factor and unfortunately measuring it can be possible only once you use it, just a look and feel would never suffice.
So here we are with a comprehensive round up of CDs and DVDs, all tried and tested thoroughly in out test center. So what’s your pick?
