Packing a suitcase for a business trip can be a nightmare. The shirts get awfully wrinkled, the trousers acquire unwanted creases and the jacket you’ve carefully placed on top turns into a crumbling disaster. Here is a great technique that will not only keep your clothes from shifting around like clothes in a tumble-dryer, but efficiently cause fewer wrinkles and creases unlike other packing methods of rolling or folding clothes together.

Bundle Wrapping

This method is perfect if the luggage opens up and lays flat.

This technique involves the careful wrapping of clothes around a ‘core object’ such as an organizer pouch. The optimal size of the pouch should ideally be 1/2 to 3/4 the size of your luggage compartment and can be filled with your undergarments, socks etc. This pouch then acts as a soft pillow for wrapping all your clothes around.

The wrapping is done in a certain order. The larger clothes should be on the outside of the core object while the clothes which are less prone to wrinkles should be closer to the core. Let’s list down the most common clothes you’ll be needing for the trip:

 Jacket
 Long-sleeved shirts
 Pants
 Shorts

If you’re starting with a jacket, then lay it flat against the bottom edge of the bag, facing down and drape the rest over the side of the bag. All other garments now face up.

As you start placing each individual garment, visualize the size and position of the core which will be placed at the top of the layered clothing at the end. (The core is placed in the middle).

Once the jacket is placed continue placing the shirts, and then pants etc till you come to the most wrinkle-resistant item. If the collar of the shirt is placed in one direction then the next one is placed in the alternating direction. This balances the thickness on both ends. The collar edges should be in alignment with (or extending slightly beyond) the top and bottom edges of the soon-to-be-added core. The waistbands of your trousers should be in alignment with the left and right edges of the core.

Remember to smoothen out wrinkles of every garment after placement.

Once you’ve finished, place the core at the top and in the middle of the pile. Now start folding the clothes around the core in reverse order of placement. For sleeved shirts/garments, fold one side around the core then the other and then bring up the bottom end of the garment and wrap it on top. When you reach the jacket, cross the sleeves in an x-shape around the bundle.

What you’ll finally end up with is a not too tightly secured bundle that not only looks compact, but serves your purpose of jettisoning the iron.

Packing Tips

Always take as little as possible. By this, I don’t mean you take just 1 shirt and wear it to 3 scheduled meetings! Carry what’s necessary so that you don’t overload your bag with things you might bring back untouched.

Empty all pockets before you start packing.

Buy travel-sized toiletries. If you’re planning for a long stay, buy them on arrival. This will cut the risk of the products leaking and will also make your bag lighter.

Wear your heaviest shoes and tuck individual shoes around the luggage. (Remember it’s not necessary to put a pair of shoes together!)

Ties can be rolled and stuffed into shoes. Socks can go there as well.

Carrying a waterproof bag will prove helpful on your return journey. You can keep your wet clothes or used underwear in it.
