We are a generation which thrives on diversity in backgrounds and interest. But for a brief period between adolescence and adulthood, we go through the odyssey years where we are basically trying to figure out our calling. More often than not, this is when the diverse youth converge on a point called the MBA, only to scatter to various fields a couple of years later. Now the million dollar question is, which field should you be considering to make your careers out of? To help you make that crucial decision, I’ve listed a few options that you can look into after pursuing your business studies.

Finance:
Finance is one of the most eminent disciplines and there are MBA courses tailor made for this field. As far as prospects are concerned, after a brief lull, the demand for business grads in the finance sector is at an all time high. This field can be sub categorised into the following fields.

 Investment Banking:
As an investment banker, you will be helping companies and the government issue securities and you will also be helping investors purchase securities, manage financial assets, trade securities and providing financial advice. Yup, your work will revolve around money… a lot of money. If, for you, making money is a major criteria (if not the sole one), this is where the moolah is.

 Commercial Banking:
As a commercial banker, you will be providing banking services to individuals, small businesses and large organizations. This sector employs more people than any other in the field of finance and provides an excellent variety in the kind of work you will be taking up.

 Corporate Finance:
In corporate finance, you will be helping companies find money to run the business, grow it, make acquisitions, plan financial future and even manage the cash on hand. In the finance department of the company, many responsibilities will quickly fall on you and this might just provide you with the kick to test your problem solving capabilities.

The other sectors in finance include insurance, money management, real estate, etc.

Health (Pharmaceuticals):
Health is one of the trendier sectors in business, worth almost $500 billion per annum. North America forms its biggest market followed by Europe. And the Asian regions are also growing fast with the rate of growth going well into the double digits. So it’s not too hard to see why this sector is notching up the newly crowned MBAs like hot pancakes.

Consultancy:
Now this is a sector which looks specifically for MBA grads to fill up its work force. Major consultancy firms like Accenture, TCS and Cap Gemini are on an aggressive recruitment drive, taking in business graduates by the thousands. This trend has elevated the status of an MBA degree from a ‘nice to have’ to a ‘necessary to have’ one.

Telecommunications:
With the advancement of technologies, telecommunications has made a huge leap in the past two decades. From being a newbie to one of the fastest growing industries in the world, it is now poised to be a major industry in the 21st century. With social and commercial dynamics everywhere achieving a global status, the telecommunications forms a backbone for the international structure and thus things will only get better. Thus, making a career in this field is a pretty safe bet.

Information Technology:
The fact that this sector has single-handedly powered our country into the big league must mean something. Information technology is a highly specialised field dealing with software or database development, enterprise management systems, telecommunication and business analysis. To be in this field, in addition to having a degree in management, you will also need to have a technical background and you will probably end up holding positions in areas such as client/server or web applications development, systems analysis and network administration. You will also need to have the ability and more importantly, the motivation to adapt yourself and your knowledge to the development in this dynamic field.

Media:
Media management is one of the most interesting new sectors in international business. When earlier, only the experienced people in the creative departments were heading large galleries and production houses, now these companies are taking a more professional stand by hiring business graduates. The media sector covers a wide array of options like communication arts, radio, television, film, music, fine arts, gallery and arts administration, museum administration, law, education, business management, marketing, public relations, creative writing, journalism, multimedia, publishing, e-commerce, theatre, dance… the list is never ending. Just take your pick.

Human Resource:
As the name suggests, a human resource is a person or an employee who works in an organisation and human resource management deals with taking care of this important asset of the company. As a human resource manager, you will basically deal with issues related to people such as compensation, hiring, performance management, organization development, safety, wellness, benefits, employee motivation, communication, administration, and training.

By taking a look at the sectors mentioned above, we are just scraping the surface of the huge pool of options available once you are through with that all important MBA education. It’s up to you to look deeper into these and other fields so that you have a smooth odyssey to your dream job.
