It’s not just dorks with bad hair or guys with a low sense of self-worth who find going to a party stressful. Unless, of course, you’re the host or you’re “Mr. Popular” with everyone in the room, there are times when you will feel like a fish out of water at a party. Here are five hints to make it less stressful and more fun.

1. Everybody feels like you

The queasy feeling in your stomach because you hardly recognize anyone is ok. Realize that everybody feels exactly the same way you do. Everybody in the room, including the host, is a wee bit stressed. But remember that the fun of attending parties is getting to interact with new people while having a nice time.

2. Meet the hosts

If you can’t recognize a single face, you at least know the hosts. So walk up to them and say hello as soon as you arrive. It’s polite too. But don’t just barge in while they‘re engrossed in a conversation with someone else. This is an opportunity to let your hosts know that you’ve arrived as well as getting introduced by them to others. They may even have a “special” somebody who they want to introduce you to – it might be the reason you were invited (er, wishful thinking?) So don’t delay that handshake.

3. Don’t wait. Go meet people

Parties are about meeting people so why wait for those two pretty women across the room to approach you? They might be just waiting for some guy to come up and talk to them. It might as well be you. There’s no need to think of some bright topic to discuss with someone or come up with clever pick-up lines: just walk up, smile, extend your hand and introduce yourself. Something as easy as “How do you know the hosts?” is enough to get a conversation going.

4. Are you the drunk people are talking about?

What could be better than free booze at a party? But remember, nobody likes a drunk. Make every other drink you have a non-alcoholic one, like water, and eat whatever’s there even if it’s just chips and dip to keep your wits about you while still having a good time. It’s better to be just another nondescript nobody than to be remembered as “that drunk at that party”.

5. Lose your friends for a while

What’s the point of hanging around with your pals the whole time when you could have done that at home? It might be comfortable but not that cool when you’re at a party. Turn around and say hi to the person next to you. That’s what parties are for.
