As competition increases between cell phone network providers, subscribers are the ones who benefit from the continuous fall in the tariff rates. In fact, the day is not far when landlines will be redundant, as the cell phones, given their portability (and their cheap tariff rates), will become the preferred medium of communication. A cell is as portable as its source of power. So, in order to make the maximum use of your phone, you have to maximize the life of the battery as well.

However, the only problem is that as most people today are using high end phones, which are anything but a mere instrument to make and receive calls, the phone is always being used– be it for listening to songs, playing games, surfing the web, clicking pictures or making videos. The fancier the phone, the more are its uses. So, it’s not surprising that the batteries nowadays don’t seem to last as long as they used to. Therefore, when the question of battery life pops up, cell users have to consider two separate but related issues:

How can they make the battery last longer?
How can they prolong their cell phone’s overall battery life?

1. The one thing that really sucks the life of a battery is signal searching, When you happen to be in an area where the signal happens to be weak, your phone will automatically try harder to get a better signal and use up a lot of power while trying to do so. If you often have to travel to places where there is a perennial network problem, it would be a good idea to get a signal booster which will amplify whatever little signal you’re receiving, and you will always enjoy near perfect reception wherever you go.

2. If you really want to save up on power, avoid using the vibration function on your phone, and just use ring tones instead. When the phone vibrates, a lot of power gets used up. Moreover, if you tend to get a lot of calls, it would be wise to keep the volume of the ring tone as low as you can.

3. If you are using a normal black and white digital phone, you can save up on a lot of power by keeping the cell’s backlight switched off. But if you can’t do without the backlight there are lots of phones that allow you to set the duration for your backlight. Keep the backlight on for the shortest possible duration. When you aren’t using the cell phone, one or two seconds is more than sufficient.

4. Switch off your cell phone. If you are sleeping, writing an exam, or are attending a business meeting and don’t plan to take calls at that time, it would be best to keep your phone switched off. You should also keep your phone off when you are using the subway (the metro) or are in a roaming area, because the phone will constantly try to search for the network which will rapidly drain out the battery.

5. If your phone has a power save feature, then use it.

6. If you know that you won’t be able to charge your phone for some time, avoid playing games or using the internet. Same goes for listening to songs or using the camera. Flash photography uses up a lot of battery juice, so avoid clicking pictures or making videos. If your phone has a Bluetooth, keep it disabled when it’s not being used.

Prolonging Battery life

1. Try to shield your phone from the sun: Nothing affects the battery as much as prolonged exposure to really high temperatures. Batteries last the longest if used in room temperature, and while you can’t help the temperature, you can do your battery a favor by not leaving it in a hot car or putting it where it’s exposed to the direct rays of the sun.

You should also avoid carrying your phone in your pocket, not only because it’s deemed as a physical hazard, but also because your body heat can increase the phone’s temperature. In addition, check if your battery seems to heat up when the phone is put on charge. If the phone feels excessively hot, then there’s something wrong with your charger.

2. Regardless of the type of battery being used, only use a charger that’s meant for your handset model.

3. Store your battery properly. If you going out of station or to a place where you won’t be getting any network, it would be good idea to take the battery out of the phone and store it in a nice cool place. Just make sure that the battery is not exposed to moisture. It would be wise to store the battery in an airtight bag or plastic. Also try to use up all the charge in the battery before storing it.

4. Regardless of the battery type, use only a charger rated for your battery, and don’t use a charger that causes the battery to heat up excessively.

5. Clean the battery and phone contacts frequently. Over time, these contacts get coated with a layer of dust. Cleaning them with a cotton swab and rubbing some alcohol on them can maximize energy transfer.

These Xpert tips should be enough to give your battery a longer, productive life. But remember, no matter how well you take care of your battery, it will have to be replaced some day.
